Drone delivery of vaccine doses speeds up vaccinations in remote areas of Ghana
While The world is in worry and hurry to vaccinate the people of their respective countries to prevent the virus and to protect the people from Covid-19 virus, Ghana finds a way to speed up the vaccination and stand as one of the countries that delivers early vaccination.
Also Ghana is one of the first countries in the world to deliver COVID-19 vaccines by drone which are operated by an American medical delivery company Zipline. The Government of Ghana decided to give vaccines to the people in remote areas with the help of drones where there is a lack of proper logistic facilities.
The Health ministry of Ghana along with Zipline and another logistics firm UPS together get the vaccines to the remote rural areas which are difficult to go by road.
“It puts into your mind a different perspective on what logistics could look like,” said Daniel Marfo, Zipline’s Senior Vice President in Africa. The drones have already delivered nearly 35,000 doses of the vital jabs.
When the Government receives the vaccines, the health ministry informs the drone operator Zipline and handover the vaccines at their launch sites. then the zipline enquired with various rural health facilities (centers) on their need per day.
After receiving information on how much quantity they need on that day, the Zipline workers put the vaccines into specialised packaging that prevents the vaccines from breaking and also keeps them at right temperature during travel to the destination health center.
The Zipline company informs the time the drone reaches a particular health center through SMS or Whatsapp just 10 minutes before, enabling health facilities to receive required vaccine doses.
Each package can hold up to 2,000 doses at a time. This drone delivery of vaccine speeds up vaccination programme and reach people at the earliest without waste of time time and reduce wastage, said Daniel Marfo
