Uttaranchal Tapkeshwar Shiv Temple
Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is a religious site and one of the most famous temples devoted to Lord Shiva. The temple lies in between the two hills with a river flowing nearby. The name of the river is the Asan River. The river and the mountains add beauty to the venerated temple. The temple lies within the Garhi cantonement area, Dehradun. It is situated at the distance of 6 kms from the main city and 8 kms from the ISBT, Dehradun.
The droplets from the river drops continuously on the Shivalinga. It serves as a spectacular sight for many visitors to see. The English words 'to drop' means 'tapak' in the Hindi language. The trickling down of the droplets are the main reason that this temple came to known as Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple. The droplets that falls on the Shivalinga disappears from the sight and reappears after some distance outside the temple premises.
The temple has a Shivalinga residing in a natural cave. It is believed that the Shivalinga was not brought to this place but naturally came out of the ground. The cave is supposed to be resided once by the teacher of Pandavas and Kauravas of the epic Mahabharata, Guru Dronacharya. Therefore, this cave is also known by his name as Drona cave. The temple is situated in a forest area with the mountains and a river alongside. This natural setting of the temple attracts many tourists around the whole year from across the globe. The temple also has statues of other Hindu deities. Among all the deities, the statue of Hanuman is the main attraction of this place.
Open from 6.00 am to 7.00 pm. Visitors can visit this place almost on all days of the year. The main time to visit this temple is on the festival of Shivratri, when this place is crowded by many devotees of Lord Shiva. It is a huge festival which is celebrated every year to enjoy the union of Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati. On Shivratri, the temple holds a feast of Bhang ki mithai and Bhang drinks and pilgrims also devote the favorite eatables to Lord Shiva.

Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is 30.7Km from Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun, 9.7Km from ISBT Dehradun and 7.5Km from Govindnagar Railway Station Deharadun. You can get taxi at the airport, taxi, City Bus or three-wheeler nearby the ISBT or Railway Station from where you can make your way to Tapkeshwar.
