Living Heritage Foundation NGO to file a case against the Goa Forest Department for approving 99% of tree felling applications. This NGO has revealed that the Goa forest department has been approving almost all the tree felling applications. The approval rate for tree felling as per the Living Heritage Foundation NGO is nearly 99.3%. They moved to the Bombay High Court in Goa and filed a status report regarding their functioning under the Goa Preservation of Trees Act, 1984. The RTI applications revealed that over a decade out of all the applications received, only 0.3% got rejected. Out of 4041 tree felling applications, 2537 applications got sanctioned, and only 19 applications got rejected. The remaining applications are kept pending. The NGO also mentioned that “this is only the tip of an iceberg as most of the trees are often fell without any permission”. Calls made to several officers in the forest department were unanswered, and the Deputy Conservator of Forests responded but held back commenting on the matter.
