Is BJP planning to create a new state 'KonguNadu'?
Is Tamilnadu also going to be bifurcated into two states or one as Union territory? Now people of Tamilnadu everywhere across party lines are debating on this. A report appeared in a local daily of Tamilnadu is the cause of all this confusion. Interestingly the newspaper is pro-BJP. It is also a cause to believe or to debate seriously on the matter. Political leaders of all parties see this is a move to divide Tamilnadu and are nefarious and politically motivated.
The Kongu region consisted of nine districts including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Salem, and Nilgiris in Western Tamilnadu and accounted for ten Lok Sabha seats and 61 Assembly seats. If BJP seriously thinks of it and creates a new state it will fetch its growth in that region. But all parties including AIADMK and the ruling DMK, CPM and others too were against the idea of bifurcating the state.
DMK leader Kanimozhi seriously said that no one can divide Tamilnadu and so people do not get worry as a strong Government is in place in the state.TPCC Chief K.S.Alagiri also criticized BJP saying it is trying for divisive politics which can not be tolerated under any circumstances. No chances of a new state and people never agree to it. Also he said there was no such need inTamilnadu as happened in other states. If BJP will go with this agenda further, it will be a bitter experience, he warned.
Tamilnadu people are of opinion initially that 'Kongunadu' idea is a ploy of the newspaper as it tried earlier as Madurai will be the second capital of the state. The trigger seems a sketch of state BJP leader Murugan when he was inducted into the Union cabinet recently which said that he hailed from 'Kongunadu'
But political observers feel that the BJP is tacitly supporting the Kongu Nadu” theory to check the DMK’s recent and repeated reference of the Central Government as Union Government in an attempt to dilute Delhi’s authority. The ruling party also got 'Jai Hind' dropped from the latest Governor’s address to the Assembly.
