Indians attacked in South Africa
Indians in South Africa (SA ) have been attacked and ransacked following former SA President Jacob Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment for contempt of Court. His followers demanded for the release of Zuma and called for protests which were fanned by the failing economy, raging pandemic and other reasons. India's External Affairs Minister Mr. Jai Shankar expressed concern over the safety of Indian diaspora and spoke to his South Africa counterpart Dr.Naledi Pandor.
Later Mr.Jai Shankar stated that his counterpart in SA assured that their government is doing utmost to enforce law and order and asserted that early restoration of normalcy and peace was their top priority. He also said that help has been poured in by Indian consulate as well.
The looting and violence erupted as protesters took to the roads. Jacob Zuma is of Zulu descent, was found guilty of defying a court order to testify before a state backed inquiry probing allegations of corruption during his term as president from 2009-2018..
Meanwhile the Zulu King Misuzulu Sinqobile kaZwelithini has called to put an end to ongoing violence and looting with immediate effect. The Zulu King also appealed to people to “Embrace the Indians” because they share a land with us and called for peace, a News Agency reported.
